I walked along a deserted beach on an offshore island, ninety miles away from 14 million people. The beach curved away for a mile ahead of me, forming a perfect sand point. Seagulls, pelicans, and seals watched perfect waves break all along the point. Not a person in sight, only the surf and the broad expanse of the ocean. I felt relaxed and at peace with the world.
